Ignition coils operate like a spark inductor. When the ignition is switched on, current flows through the primary winding of the ignition coil, which creates a magnetic field around the coil. This magnetic field is also transmitted to the secondary winding by the common core core of both windings. Opening the interrupter in the primary circuit of the ignition coil induces a high voltage impulse in the secondary circuit since the magnetic field rapidly collapses. The high voltage reaches the spark gap of a spark plug through the ignition cable in order, for example, to ignite the fuel / air mixture in the cylinder of an ottomotor at the right time.
